Why
Engineers cannot optimise what they do not understand. Finance cannot challenge forecasts without cloud literacy. A one-size-fits-all training deck fails both audiences. Tailored training empowers each persona to make cost-conscious decisions within their domain — engineers learn rightsizing and scheduling; finance learns cloud billing mechanics and commitment trade-offs.
What
Build a structured training program tailored to different personas (Engineering, Finance, Product) covering FinOps principles and specific cost responsibilities.
How
Define Persona-Specific Curricula
| Persona | Core Topics | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Engineers | How cloud billing works, tagging responsibilities, rightsizing, scheduling non-prod, reading cost dashboards, Infracost PR comments | 90-min workshop + hands-on lab |
| Finance | Cloud billing models (on-demand, committed, spot), reading CUR/FOCUS data, forecast methodology, variance analysis | 60-min workshop + dashboard walkthrough |
| Product | Unit economics, cost-per-feature thinking, demand intake process, how product decisions drive cloud cost | 45-min session |
| Leadership | FinOps maturity model, KPI interpretation, governance roles, executive dashboard orientation | 30-min briefing |
Build Training Materials
For each persona: slide deck, hands-on exercise (if applicable), and a 1-page cheat sheet they can keep. Use real examples from your organisation’s cloud estate — generic examples don’t stick.
Include a “FinOps for Engineers” cheat sheet covering: how to read your team’s cost dashboard, what your tags mean, how to submit an optimisation ticket, how to interpret Infracost output, and who to contact for cost questions.
Deliver and Iterate
Run initial sessions. Collect feedback. Iterate the content. Establish a recurring cadence: onboarding training for new hires, annual refresher for all staff, and ad-hoc deep dives on new topics (e.g., when a new commitment strategy is adopted).
Deliverable Checklist
- Persona-specific curricula defined
- Training materials built (decks, labs, cheat sheets)
- Initial training sessions delivered to each persona group
- Feedback collected and materials iterated
- Recurring cadence established (onboarding + annual refresh)
